Not only is it a celebration of the history of the gay rights movement, but it also demonstrates our commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive society for our diverse communities. To receive a virtual invite, email: Alan Gard iner, Cabinet spokesperson for Corporate Services, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting LGBT History Month this year - it’s a fabulous opportunity to celebrate and promote equality and diversity for the benefit of our communities in Barnsley. The first get together will take place on Monday 15 February at 11am where guests can hear how Darfield’s Maurice Dobson founded the museum.
It’s a fabulous opportunity to remember and increase awareness of the LGBT community - their history, lives and experiences.īarnsley Council is proud to be joining in these celebrations locally through a host of activities brought together from across the council. The month was first founded in 1994 and has since evolved into a month-long celebration across the world - with February coinciding with the 2003 abolition of section 28 (an act which stopped schools and councils ‘promoting’ homosexuality). LGBT History Month is a month-long celebration that takes place every February to celebrate and observe the lives and achievements of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans communities. This week marks the beginning of LGBT History Month and Barnsley Council are thrilled to be supporting this annual celebration of equality and diversity by raising the rainbow pride flag for the very first time on Barnsley’s beautiful town hall.
